This guy threw down this year, he took 1st place at The Roots stop #2 in Ottawa, got 2nd overall in The Roots series, got 1st in the Open division and rails at the Canadian Open in Peterborough. Gavin got stupidly consistent this year, it was ridiculous to watch him ride. Can't wait to see what he throws down next year.

Thanks to Jeff Mintz and Chris Stone for filming when I was not able to and thanks to Laurie Leblanc, Jordan Sein and Josh Linkletter for being great chase boat drivers.

It was only a matter of time before a competition of this nature took place in Ontario, Canada. At the rate that this wakeboard world is growing, the wakeskate scene continues to be pushed more and more and now the cable industry has skyrocketed. Riders are learning tricks in weeks that would take years behind a boat to learn. A Sesitec System 2 was just introduced in Sarnia, Ontario last month called, Boarder Pass. Recently, Boarder Pass hosted the annual Sarnia’s WAKE-up Call on the System 2 making it the first ever cable competition in Ontario entirely pulled behind a straight line cable. The competition was put together last minute and ended up being a complete success. The amateur competition had 10 brand new wakeboarders (some of which have never rode behind a boat) the wakeskate competition had 8 riders and the open category had 20 riders. The day was full of great weather and great times as Liquid Force had donated a 15ft inflatable to just add that “BRostock” feel. Laura Bloomberg, a first time wakeboarder behind the System 2 just a week ago came back to sweep up the amateur division knocking out locals Cole Dillon (2nd) and Cody Caruthers (3rd) The wakeskate competition was a close battle as well. This portion of the event was a “King of the Wake” format as each rider was paired on the dock to eliminate their opponent and move on to face the next brackets winner. It all came down to Jesse Sibbald and Jordan Sullivan in the end but Jordan’s consistent shuv’s off of the METAB Butter Box were just too much to compete with. And last but certainly not least but by far the most entertaining portion of this event. These 20 riders in this open category gave it everything they had. Each of these 20 riders did not let the obstacles go to waste, including the new 54ft A Frame that was just recently installed on behalf of Base Camp. The competition started at 20, went down to 10 and then the riders chose 5 to move on from there to the finals. Dylan and Chad Rivait, Mike Perrier, Chris Sinkic and Colin Chrysler were among the top 5. The judges in the end had one of the toughest jobs of the day, in a heated debate for well over 5 minutes the decision was finally announced. Dylan Rivait was awarded the undisputed Cable Champion of Ontario with his consistent air tricks and 270 on to the A Frame it was no question he had what it takes to be crowned the title for the day. Moments after announcing this, Dylan went for a victory lap as 15+ people gather on the inflatable for a photo with Dylan doing a raley in the background. Taking a close second place was Michael Perrier and in third place was Colin Chrysler. For a first time event run at Boarder Pass and a first event of its kind, it was certainly a success. The atmosphere created at grassroots events is always so fun and entertaining and is great to have an opportunity to bring everyone together. Hats off to everyone involved in making this event a success and see you on September 18th for the final event of the season!

This past weekend, the Buckeye Wakeboard Team ventured up to Collingwood to participate in the 2010 Wakestock: Wakeboarding World Series. The 7 young athletes have been competing this summer at grass root wakeboarding events that have been hosted in Newmarket, Ottawa, Bobcaygeon and Gravenhurst. Wakestock brings wakeboard and wakeskate enthusiasts from both the amateur and pro levels for a weekend of shredding and excitement on the water. The amateur level heats took place on August 6th with inclement water conditions that proved challenging to even the most seasoned rider. Despite choppy water the team members again proved that skill and determination can result in solid runs and a walk to the podium.

The morning began with Jenn Evans and Kayleigh Panter getting bumped up a category but shining to 1st and 3rd place in the Novice Female 16-19. Newcomer and Novice male Jamie Panter aced his run and took 1st in the Novice Male 16-19 category. These 3 young athletes from Fenelon Falls are newcomers to the wakeboard circuit and are making waves with the Buckeye Team this summer.

The Intermediate Males: 13 -15 Heat showcased the 3 seasoned members of the team, Harrison Carter, Mitch Lowry and Will Morris. With a standup run, Harrison Carter took first place on the podium, followed by Mitch Lowry with a clean 2nd place and Will Morris rounding it out at 4th place. These young men have been throwing it down on the local amateur wakeboard scene for the past 3 summers and will finish off the season at the Canadian Wakeboard open in Peterborough on August 27th to 29th. The seven member team is sponsored by Buckeye Marine and operates out of The Wake Institute in Bobcaygeon. The rotating roster of coaches include Jay Poole, Jeremy Eckford, Ally Boothroyd, Erika Langman and Mark Norris, who are well known in wakeboarding circles. The youngest member of the team, Michael Evans did not compete at the Wakestock event but was on hand to lend his support of his team members.
